The Consumer-Generated Media Craze

A candid article written by Pamela Parker for ClickZ, “You and Your Users, Marketing Together,” exposed the very real potential for wearing out our customers with so many similar consumer-generated media opportunities. After all, how many reviews can one write or read, for that matter? And what about sharing our personal photos, life goals, most embarrassing moments and digging deep to enter another “finish this ad we started” contest? Even more annoying is when product rivals run fraternal campaigns and then other rivals join in the short film contest madness. Where will it end? Will marketers be out of their jobs soon? Don’t think so. Getting your consumers intimately involved in your brand is fantastic, but it really only appeals to a small segment of the market. Who has the time, energy and desire to help you market your brand? The few, the passionate, your brand evangelists. But most consumers still need to be reached out to in less interactive ways. Better yet, more consumers will reach out to you when they want what you offer. Invite them in, but don’t expect them to redecorate your site while they’re engaged.
